SANGEA is back at Ribbon Rouge for another fun filled year and will be presenting again at this year's Gala! Below is our quick chat with them and some information on how they grove out to the beat!
Most of the rhythms and songs SANGEA plays are from West Africa. This group has members from both the Latin and African community. The African and Latin culture are very similar and because of our similarities and a few little differences, when combined, they have a great connection. Like the Latin culture, the African culture has rhythm in every movement. There is rhythm in the way we walk, speak, work and everything else we do.
The human body was made to move and create. The SANGEA African performance group take this idea literally and consistently create wonderful and energetic experiences for their audiences. This dance and performance group has been performing together for about three years with many of its members having performed on their own for many more years. Their union now creates an excellent performance that will get you up and moving. SANGEA is passionate about sharing and celebrating the beauty of Africa and African culture.
What They Stand for!
SANGEA is defiantly interested about being involved in the community. They are supporters of many causes such as Breast Health and Action for Healthy Communities. You can also find them performing at community events and festivals such as Peace Day, Latin Festival, Africa Day Festival in Calgary, Cari West Festival, Corn Festival, Heritage Festival. SANGEA also perform for the Teachers Association (via Safe and Caring communities), weddings, and parties. They are excited to spread positivity and African culture wherever they go. SANGEA is also an award winning group being recognized as the Fil Fraser Award 2015, for Outstanding Performance, winner of the Afro Canadian Heros, Artist of the year 2014, and also the winner of the 2013 and 2014 Excellent Community Initiative Group Award by Action for Healthy Communities.
SANGEA gives some sound advice for anyone in every situation who have goals or want to make a change:
“…persevere, work hard and never lose sight of what you are doing. Always surround yourself with positive people.” ~Reckie
